Institutional Review

Under the Qualifications (Education and Training) Act 1999 and according to the Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in the European Higher Education Area, providers of education have primary responsibility for their quality assurance. A key element of quality assurance is the external review of the institution as a whole. Under National College of Ireland’s quality assurance procedures, this review of NCI took place on the 9th-10th February 2010. HETAC is our awarding body for programmes at level 6 and above, of the National Framework of Qualifications. The report of the review and NCI's response will be placed on NCI's website once approved by HETAC.

Objectives of the Institutional Review

The Institutional review is intended:

  • to enhance public confidence in the quality of education and training provided by NCI and the standards of the awards made

  • to contribute to coherent strategic planning and governance at NCI

  • to assess the effectiveness of the quality assurance arrangements operated by NCI

  • to confirm the extent that NCI has implemented the national framework of qualifications and procedures for access, transfer and progression

  • to provide recommendations for the enhancement of the education and training provided by NCI

  • to assess and provide recommendations for any other objective that NCI chooses to include in the review eg operation of off-campus teaching & learning

NCI Terms of Reference

The final terms of reference for NCI's were agreed with HETAC in October 2009.
